"It was really fun; the activities were awesome!" Shayla, 4th grade
“Amazing,” Makaila, 1st grade
"It was awesome; I liked all of the explosions!" Patrick, 6th grade

LASD Film Festival Coming to Covington in March
As I have been walking the halls the last fewweeks, it has been so exciting to see our students engaged in creating films for the LASD Film Festival. Students have been writing, creating and editing films, some have been participating with their classes and some students have been creating films to submit independently. What creativity our Covington students demonstrate every day! A few examples of films I had the privilege of viewing were: "How to Bake Cake Pops," “The Quest for Finding the Perfect Shoe,” "How to Add Fractions", a film about the Cornerstone literature this year and a collaborative two classroom video on Recycling. Mark your calendars for March 29th from 4-6 pm when all of LASD will be convening at Covington for the 2nd annual Film Festival!
Ilearn & Professional Development
This week our 1st-4th grade teachers have been participating in an all-day Innovative Strategies Training. The training was held at Covington. Next week our 2nd and 3rd grade teachers will be participating in English Language Development Training.

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members:
The start of a New Year is always a good timereview school goals, policies and share friendly reminders. Last week parking lot reminders were shared with you in our bulletin. This week we wanted to reprint a few of our safety protocols.
Safety First
At Covington, we are continuing our commitment to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. In the coming weeks, we will be reviewing our safety plan and procedures. We will continue to practice fire and earthquake drills and will also review and practice our Code Red lock-down procedures. In an effort to ensure consistent safety procedures for all, we respectfully ask the following of all parents and visitors:
• Please stop by the office when entering the school to sign in and receive a visitor sticker/badge. Even if you plan on only staying for a short time, or are a familiar face to all, you need to sign in at the front office.
•If you are bringing your child’s lunch to school, do not take it to their classroom, put it in their backpack, or carry it to the lunch tables. Leave it in the school office or on the drop-off table outside the Multi. We will make sure your child picks up their lunch.
To ensure consistent and effective safety procedures through out the Los Altos School District, all LASD staff will participate in an Emergency Preparedness training facilitated by the Los Altos and Mountain View Police Departments. On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 22, all LASD staff will meet with law enforcement officers who will provide updated information for Code Red lockdown procedures.
Following the Emergency Preparedness training, we will evaluate our safety plan, update our procedures, and conduct a Code Red safety drill. Preparation for our Code Red drill will include informal practice in each classroom and a subsequent formal school-wide Code Red drill.
As we prepare students for the drill, we will be sensitive to student emotions and feelings regarding the seriousness and nature of Code Red drills. Our Code Red procedures will not be connected to the recent tragic event in Connecticut. We will adhere to our practice of not discussing the incident with students. The details of what students are aware of will continue to be left to the discretion of each individual family. If students need to discuss their feelings or concerns regarding our Code Red drill, I will be available. Through out the process of practicing this important emergency procedure, we will reassure all students of their safety at Covington School.
Parents will be informed of the date in which the formal drill is planned and are encouraged to talk to their children about the importance of all safety drills. Thank you for being partners in providing a safe learning environment for our children.
Thank you for your support. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Coyote Pack News
Last Friday, 140 Coyote Pack Runners completed 143 miles. That's a running total of 930 miles to date. If The Pack were running from Covington Elementary to Washington D.C. (along Interstate 80) we'd be in Green River, Wyoming. This week, 20 runners earned their red 5-mile ribbons and 2 runners earned their orange 10-mile ribbons. We will deliver these on Thursday. Great effort by ALL our Coyote runners!
On Sunday Covington runners were out in force (many sporting Covington orange & blue) at the 1st annual Jingle Bell Run, sponsored by On Your Mark. It was a fun run that started at OYM and followed trails into Los Altos Hills. At the completion the runners enjoyed Hobee's coffee cake and the thrill of completing a 5k! Awesome job runners!
The next fun run for which we'd like a lot of Covington participation is the Los Altos New Years Day 5k Run. This is a free community event put on by Los Altos Parks and Recreation. The 5k starts at the corner of State and Main at 9am. Coyote Runners, we will meet behind the clock tower near the start of the race. We hope to see Coyote mascot running thisrace! Please remember to wear your Covington orange & blue!

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and time with your family. It is hard to believe we are over a third of the way done with our school year and only three weeks away from our Winter Break.
Book Fair Ends Tomorrow (Friday, November 30)
Thank you to Sandy Furuchi, Mara Starkey, Jessica Schantz and our awesome PTA volunteers, for their fabulous work and dedication to Covington's Book Fair. The event is going great so far. It has been very busy at all times each day. There is still one more day to shop, so feel free to stop by for one last chance on Friday.
Wilson and Jackson, the Last Maasai Warriors to Visit our Upper Grades Tomorrow!
For the last two years, our student council has led our school-wide involvement with the Free the Children organization. Over the past two years, Covington students have raised and donated a total of $14,036.20 to support the community of Totoras, Ecuador. Our efforts contributed to the building of a school and providing clean water for Ecuador.
Because Covington has been so incredibly successful at fundraising and giving, we are the recipients of a free presentation / speech by Wilson and Jackson to our upper grade students tomorrow! This is a very special opportunity that is only being offered to one school in the peninsula – Covington School. Wilson and Jackson, the Last Maasai Warriors are dear friends of the Free the Children organization. Wilson and Jackson are incredibly inspiring young men who have preserved and triumphed in staying true to their culture while embracing development and progress. They draw from their deeply personal experiences of surviving and flourishing in the Maasai region and bring to all who them meet a unique perspective on issues we face both locally and internationally. Their message to persevere and succeed is incredibly powerful!
