Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Families,

As you may know, we have done a great deal of work in implementing The Coyote Way - which is our positive climate initiative that was launched last year.  The Coyote Way describes the ways in which we wish to see our children interact throughout their day at Covington.  We often remind the students that the creation of The Coyote Way came from input from teachers, parents, and the students themselves.  In other words, The Coyote Way is something we ALL want.

Instead of giving students a long list of learning and social behaviors we expect, we boiled down the ideals into 4 buckets: Responsibility, Respect, Kind Mind, and Empathy.   This year we will add mindfulness to the area of Kind Mind, teaching our students strategies and tools to stay present in the moment and calming the mind.

However, it’s one thing to say to a child, be empathetic or use a kind mind.  We also need to show them what these characteristics look like.  And, we need to give students opportunities to practice.   We recently created a graphic to help explain to students what it looks like when we are following The Coyote Way.  Our Project Cornerstone docents can use this tool when they work with our students on their lessons.  Our teachers can utilize the tool to support the social/emotional learning of their students.   I want to share it with you, as you might find it useful at home.  I’d also welcome any feedback you might have on this graphic. Special thanks to Jing Wu who has updated the artwork!

You can view the graphic, The Coyote Way - What does it look like? by clicking the link below:

https://covingtonschool.org/files/user/238/file/Coyote-Way-What-it-Looks-Like.pdf

We will continue to work with our students on The Coyote Way.  We also know that children follow our adult models very closely, so it’s important to model the behaviors we wish to instill in them.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Wade Spenader- Principal

Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Families,

Thank you to those parents that have already made all their back to school purchases & donations.  However, we are only 43% of the way to the target that we had hoped to raise.  In particular, teachers are currently booking field trips and need to know what trips they will be able to go on, based on the donations received. If we don’t receive enough donations, trips will need to be cancelled.   If you haven't yet completed your back to payments/donations please do so using this link:  http://tinyurl.com/covington-bts

Reminders:

  • Students should not arrive on campus until 8:10am because that is the time we start supervision on the blacktop.

  • A 3:10pm bell rings each day to indicate that it’s time to go home- unless a student is involved in an after-school program or being directly supervised.

  • Primary students (K-2) need to be picked up at their dismissal time. They are not permitted to wait unsupervised for older siblings to be dismissed. Please contact me if this is an issue for your family.

  • We love our Covington families, even our furry family members.  But, we cannot have dogs (of any size) on campus during school hours.  This includes drop off and pick up times.

Have a great weekend!

Regards,

Wade Spenader- Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

A Walk through the Classrooms

With school in full swing I take great pleasure in getting into classrooms to see what’s happening.  This time of year provides the best opportunity, as classroom routines and structures are in place, and the students are fully engaged in tackling curriculum.   Just a few highlights of my visits this week include:

1st graders working collaboratively in groups to take on a design challenge- designing a parachute for their graham cracker teddy bear.   Implementing their learning in science, the students needed to account for weight, air resistance, and different materials.

2nd graders working on math- basic addition concepts are taken a step further with a discussion on commutative properties.  Impressive!

6th graders reviewing for an exam on states of matter and particle energy- where the students themselves are creating a review activity (you know you’ve mastered a concept when you can teach it).

When you see the rigorous conceptual learning in each classroom, combined with the daily energy and excitement on campus, you know we are giving our students the exceptional learning experience they deserve.

New Date for Coffee with the Principal- Please note a date change (formerly Sept. 21st) for this year’s first Coffee with the Principal.  We will now meet on Friday, Sept. 29th at 8:45am.

Sincerely,

Wade Spenader- Principal

Snow Cones To Go!

Don't miss enjoying a yummy snow cone after school this Friday afternoon! Please help the 6th graders raise funds for a class gift for the school. They will be hard at work serving up snow cones at 2:40 pm this Friday in front of the multi. They are $3 each. Buy a treat to-go and support our 6th graders. Note: This is not a stay and play. See you then! -

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Solar Project Coming Soon

You may have noticed the trees that were once in the parking lot have gone missing.   Those trees needed to be removed in preparation for the solar panels which will be installed in the parking lot beginning Sept. 18th.

The district is installing solar shade structures at each of its schools. The structures will be installed in school parking lots (with the exception of Oak, where panels will be installed over their eating area).

Installing the solar structures will enable the district to save hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and reduce our carbon footprint, equivalent to 3.5 million pounds of CO2 annually.

Construction will begin September 18th and continue for 8 - 10 weeks. Construction fencing is scheduled for installation on September 18 and all work and materials will be contained within the fenced area.  Construction work will adhere to the noise and safety requirements of all local enforcement codes.

While we still we have use of the drop off/pick up lane, traffic and parking will be impacted on and around the school during construction. We are working with police and traffic control departments to mitigate the impacts on the school neighborhoods.  There are going to be obvious inconveniences during construction that we will need to endure.  But please keep in mind that those inconveniences are temporary.   We are encouraging carpooling, walking or biking to school- which are good practices for the environment at any time of year.  We also anticipate that Rosita Ave. and our back entrance being used more for drop off and pick up for some of our families to avoid the construction.  Adjustments in the parking lot duty will be made to handle the increased flow in those areas.

The District is paying for this project out of its operating budget. No bond monies are being used.

Please check the district website for updated communications and information.
Thank You!!

I want to thank the team of parents who helped out Ms. Becking in preparing all of our new leveled readers for the classrooms.  It was, and still is, quite a big job and I really appreciate the help to get those books into our students hands.  A big thank you to Jessica S, Emily H, Ariel C, Sally K, Lilly C, Demetra M, Mitsuyo W, Jennifer W, Angela W, Tammi, Jillian, Christine and anyone else who lent a hand!

Back to School Night

Back to School night is Thursday, Aug. 31st.  This evening event is a tremendous opportunity to begin the partnership between parents and their child’s teacher- which is so vital to your child’s educational experience.  Simply by attending BTSN, you are sending a message to your child that you view their education as something with real value.

Teachers will go over their protocols and procedures, policies and curriculum- and all that is important.  What I think is most important (and I’ve expressed this to our teachers) is the opportunity to get to know the teachers as people.

Please note that this will be a parents-only evening, so make sure to arrange childcare ahead of time.

Back to School Night Schedule:

  • K-3rd presentations from 6:15 to 7:00

  • General meeting & Staff Introductions in the multi at 7:00pm

  • 4th-6th presentations from 7:15 to 8:00pm

  • Klinkman, Schwartzman at 5:45pm, Mitchell at 6:30pm

Reminder: Friday Sept 1st is a Minimum Day. Kinders dismiss at 12:00pm, 1st - 6th grades dismiss at 12:15pm.  There is no supervision on campus after 12:15pm.

Megan Scatena will be moving to San Carlos school district, to teach 4th grade and be closer to home.  It was a difficult decision to leave Covington but one made in the best interest of her family.

Heather Hlodan will be teaching in Sunnyvale School District, 1st grade.  This move fulfills her career goal to teach in a Title I school.

Jill Croft has been selected as one of 7 teachers in LASD to become a Instructional Support Teacher for Literacy.  Her expertise in this field will be a huge benefit to the teachers of Almond.  Jill will still be active in the Covington community as a parent.

Jolene Welch has taken a year’s leave to spend more time with family, travel, and become immersed in STEM and science curriculum.  She looks forward to returning to Covington after her leave.

Lindsey Olmstead recently purchased a house in San Martin and has accepted a 2nd grade teaching position in Gilroy.  With a new baby, the proximity to home was an important factor.

Liz Castner (upper grade SDC) will be matriculating with her 3 sixth grade students to Blach, where she will teach the SDC class.

Mackenzie Breining (primary SDC), who is expecting her first child very soon, has purchased a home in Gilroy and will seek a position closer to home.

Dr. Louise Ross (school psychologist) will be pursuing opportunities outside of LASD.

I want to thank all of the above teachers for their service and dedication to our students.  Please join me in wishing them the best on their new endeavors.

I look forward to sharing biographical information about incoming new staff in our next edition.

Wade Spenader- Principal

Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Community,

There’s a famous saying, specifically about the raising of children, “It takes a village”. Given the complexities of the world today, I like to say  “sometimes it take a metropolis!”

Because we all want the best for our students at Covington, we have formed an incredible team of teachers, staff, and parents.  We are a strong metropolis!  A huge aspect to the partnership of parents and students is our volunteer opportunities.  I continue to be amazed, and supremely grateful, for the amount of hours and effort which our community volunteers to help our students.  Our volunteers corps consists of parents, grandparents, community members, nannies and even a retired LASD principal!  Volunteers help in the classroom, on the playground, on field trips and at special events.

Kudos to the brave parents who show up early to direct traffic and keep our children safe.  We treasure the volunteers who love to help in the library every week.  There are the dedicated hot lunch volunteers who distribute lunches daily.  There is a fantastic team of parents who organize run club on Friday’s at lunch recess.   We have moms who help out on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s in the Coyote Lair teaching origami or organizing board games.  There is team of parents who coordinate our Junior Olympics team, the volunteers who help with Walk-a-thon, the Auction, Field Day, etc. The list goes on and on.

On behalf of the staff, I cannot express enough our extreme appreciation for all the people who volunteer their time here at Covington.

If you gave, even an hour, to Covington students, we want to honor you with a small token of our appreciation.  Please join us on Friday at 8:00 am in our multi for the Volunteer Breakfast.  It’s the staff’s way of saying “thank you” for your partnership and contribution.   And please stay for the PTA Awards which immediately follow the breakfast.

Regards,

Wade Spenader- Principal

As we wind down for summer, I'd like to invite you to join me in "Reading the Shelves" during the week of May 30th.  What’s that?  At the end of year, I need to assure that all books are in the correct order bookcase-by-bookcase, shelf-by-shelf.  Many hands make light work, so your help with this task is greatly appreciated!  Training is provided.  Drop by the library any time during the school day on May 30 through June 1st to enjoy some coffee and snacks!

Please note that this is the last week for classroom library visits.

Please return all library books as soon as possible.  Books overdue after May 26 will be considered lost and a bill notice issued.

And finally, I want to acknowledge those of you who volunteer your time in the library each week.  I cannot thank you enough for your dedication!  You are an important reason Covington School is the special place that it is.  Thank you! - Mrs. Starkey

Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Community,

We are just a month away from the last day of school and we have so much still to do.

Multicultural Fair

Thank you so much to Catherine Long and Tammy Palfreyman and their team of wonderful parents for putting together the best Covington Multicultural Fair yet. The turnout of families was fantastic. I’ve received so much positive feedback about the event. Both children and parents were joyful to celebrate our incredible,  diverse Covington community.

Coming Up

Be sure to check the Covington Calendar (http://covingtonschool.org/) and read our newsletters for important end-of-school year events coming up in the next few weeks. To point out just a few events you may not want to miss: the 4-6th grade music concert at 1pm on Monday May 15th, plus the 6th grade basketball tourneys, 6th grade CSTEM Expo, and Volunteer Tea.

Parent Input

As I explained last week in the Howler, if you have input to give your child’s current teacher, we are asking you to give that input to the teacher directly-  either in an email or a meeting.  Parent input that is helpful for us to know includes information on how you see your child’s learning style.  It is not appropriate to request a certain teacher.  We request that you refrain from doing that as we cannot guarantee such a request can be granted.   Staffing for next year is not finalized so making a teacher request is not practical for that reason alone.

If you find it necessary, you may also set up a meeting with me or email me directly with your input regarding placement for next year.

Regards,

Wade Spenader- Principal

Parking Reminder

St. William’s Church will be doing work in their parking lot Thursday May 11th and Friday May 12th.  Please do not park at St. William’s Church on those two days. Thank you!

Opt In For Text Messages

How would the school relay critical information to you if there was a power outage?  Sending a school-wide email blast isn’t an option in that situation.  However, there is a way you can get critical information via text.

Our effective home-school partnership hinges on consistent and strong communication.  As we move forward to strengthen communication, LASD is excited to launch a new communication service that will allow us to communicate with you via SMS text messaging. This service will be used to enhance our existing methods of communication and will be used only to provide information that is timely and relevant such as emergency notifications and minimum day reminders.

In order to participate in the new service you must indicate your willingness to receive text messages via your phone. Please note, although the district does not charge for this service, normal text message charges may apply according to your wireless contract.

To opt in just send “Y” or “YES” to 67587.

You can opt out anytime by replying to one of our messages with ‘stop.”

PTA Auction Item

Play Dodgeball with Ms. Marquis!  Get ready for summer with a fun game of dodgeball with friends on Monday, May 22 from 2:40-3:40.  There are still a few spots remaining for this annual fundraiser game—but only for students in grades 1-3.  (The upper grade game is sold out.) 1st and 2nd graders will be supervised on the green field until the 3rd graders arrive.  Popsicles are served at the end. Donation is $30/child.  Please email sonia_brunner@yahoo.com if your child is interested in attending.

Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Community,

With the arrival of May this week, we’ve entered a unique time during a school year.  We’ve reached a nexus where we simultaneously work on end of the year projects and prepare for the upcoming school year.  It’s a busy time!

One of the important pieces of work that lies ahead for our staff is the building of next year’s classes.  The time and thoughtfulness put in by grade level teachers as they create class lists for the upcoming year is impressive.  Teachers work to build heterogeneous classes that factor in such elements as learning styles, friendships, genders, and a list of many more factors.  Watching this work, as teachers pour hours into the process, is an affirmation to the dedication of the teachers and how well they know their students.  The process takes several sessions and isn’t really totally complete until the class lists are posted on Monday, August 14th.

My experience tells me that teachers are the best ones to build the classes.  They spend the most time with their students and understand each student’s needs the best.  Parents, in the past, have been able to give input, through a form in the office.  However, this year, we are asking for parent input differently, as we are doing away with the input form.

If you have input to give your child’s current teacher, we are asking you to give that input to the teacher directly-  either in an email or a meeting.

Please know that class building is something we take very seriously.  We want the best for ALL of our students and we know that building classes is a critical piece to their success.

Regards,

Wade Spenader- Principal

Opt In to Important Text Messages

Egan Needs Volunteers

Volunteer for Egan’s Viking Showcase - June 1, 2017.

Egan's VIKING SHOWCASE is coming on Thursday, June 1, and we need your help!

Previously known as Portfolio Day, the Viking Showcase provides the opportunity for our 8th grade students to reflect on their personal and academic growth and to receive acknowledgment for their work. This is accomplished in an interview format. We welcome parents and community members to volunteer as interviewers.  The interview process increases student motivation, builds a sense of accomplishment, and fosters community involvement with the school.  Past participants have truly enjoyed this invaluable experience.

Please save the date and sign up to volunteer at Viking Showcase Volunteer.  Confirmation emails will be sent once we have assigned all volunteers.  See Egan’s website for more information:  Viking Showcase.  If you have any questions, please contact Gayle Mujica at gaylemujica@mac.com or Susan Cook at Susanlyanecook@gmail.com

Message from the Principal

SBAC Testing begins this week

Dear Covington Community,

This week we begin the statewide assessments known as the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium- or simply SBAC.  Our window of time to give the tests is April 24th-May 12th, and all 3rd through 6th graders are required to take the assessments.  (Make-up testing will be conducted May 15th-19th).

Teachers will share with you their individual class schedule for testing.

Please keep the following in mind.

SBAC Testing - Grades 3 thru 6

  • This state assessment is ONE measure for looking at the learning growth of our students and in reflecting on the overall progress of our school. Please support a healthy mindset around this assessment by simply encouraging students to "show what they know" by giving their best effort. There is no prep for this test!
  • Our staff would be appreciative if you do not schedule any appointments during your child's grade level testing time.We are REQUIRED to ensure that every student takes this assessment. If your child is present on the day of scheduled testing, they will take the assessment with their class in an environment with which they are familiar. If your child is late (past 8:45am) or does not attend (obviously if they are sick - do not send them to school), they will take the test on another day in a different classroom and probably not with their classroom teacher.
  • Finally, routine and structure are vital during these days. Please support your child in getting a great night sleep, a nutritious breakfast, arrival to school on time, and a healthy school snack.
  • We look forward to creating the most positive environment possible for our students to perform to their greatest potential.

As always, please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Wade Spenader- Principal

Important Reminders about Dismissal Time Protocols

We have a 2:50pm bell to alert students when it’s time to leave campus.  If a parent or caregiver is here supervising a student prior to that bell, they must be directly and actively supervising.  Direct and active supervision is defined as Parents/Caregivers being close enough to watch and listen to their children at all times.  Students biking or walking home independently must proceed directly home, they are not to stay after school and play unsupervised.

Please also remember that students are supposed to be picked up promptly AT dismissal time and should not be left alone to wait after school. That means that the parent/guardian should arrive at least a few minutes prior to dismissal.

We have three dismissal times at Covington to maximize instructional minutes for our students.

  • Remember, if you have a primary student who is dismissed at 2:15 (Kinder) and/or 2:20pm(1st-2nd), a parent or caregiver must be present at that time.
  • Younger students cannot be left to wait alone for an older sibling who will be dismissed at 2:40pm
  • Students are not allowed to play on the playground unsupervised while waiting for a parent at pick up time. This includes the kinder playground.
  • This is for your children’s safety.  So please remember to pick up your younger child at 2:15pm or 2:20pm and wait with them until your older child is dismissed.
  • This is a great opportunity to meet other parents waiting at the front of the school and make lasting connections.
