Message from the Principal |
Dear Covington Community, There’s a famous saying, specifically about the raising of children, “It takes a village”. Given the complexities of the world today, I like to say “sometimes it take a metropolis!” Because we all want the best for our students at Covington, we have formed an incredible team of teachers, staff, and parents. We are a strong metropolis! A huge aspect to the partnership of parents and students is our volunteer opportunities. I continue to be amazed, and supremely grateful, for the amount of hours and effort which our community volunteers to help our students. Our volunteers corps consists of parents, grandparents, community members, nannies and even a retired LASD principal! Volunteers help in the classroom, on the playground, on field trips and at special events. Kudos to the brave parents who show up early to direct traffic and keep our children safe. We treasure the volunteers who love to help in the library every week. There are the dedicated hot lunch volunteers who distribute lunches daily. There is a fantastic team of parents who organize run club on Friday’s at lunch recess. We have moms who help out on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s in the Coyote Lair teaching origami or organizing board games. There is team of parents who coordinate our Junior Olympics team, the volunteers who help with Walk-a-thon, the Auction, Field Day, etc. The list goes on and on. On behalf of the staff, I cannot express enough our extreme appreciation for all the people who volunteer their time here at Covington. If you gave, even an hour, to Covington students, we want to honor you with a small token of our appreciation. Please join us on Friday at 8:00 am in our multi for the Volunteer Breakfast. It’s the staff’s way of saying “thank you” for your partnership and contribution. And please stay for the PTA Awards which immediately follow the breakfast. Regards, Wade Spenader- Principal |
Field Day is Approaching! |
FIELD DAY 2017 is FRIDAY, JUNE 2nd! Now that the Junior Olympics are over, it's almost time for Field Day 2017! On Friday, June 2nd from 10:00 am- 12:00 pm, all Covington students will be participating in Field Day. Field Day is a fun filled event where all students participate in games (for example: bowling, "pin the nose on the coyote", seed spitting, etc.), face painting and a blow-up obstacle course. We have food, music, lots of water, and a "6th grade vs teachers" volleyball game. If you haven't had much of a chance to volunteer this year, this is the event for you! We need parent volunteers at each game, for face painting, and for serving snacks. We need your help to make it a success. Volunteer hours are from 9:30 to noon. Please sign up on this Google doc. We need at least two parents from each class to help!! Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! Louanne Gonzalez (louannegonzalez@gmail.com) |
LIBRARY NEWS |
The end of the school year is rapidly approaching. I've had another wonderful year getting to know your children and watching the grow! As we wind down for summer, I'd like to invite you to join me in "Reading the Shelves" during the week of May 30th. What’s that? At the end of year, I need to assure that all books are in the correct order bookcase-by-bookcase, shelf-by-shelf. Many hands make light work, so your help with this task is greatly appreciated! Training is provided. Drop by the library any time during the school day on May 30 through June 1st to enjoy some coffee and snacks! Please note that this is the last week for classroom library visits. Please return all library books as soon as possible. Books overdue after May 26 will be considered lost and a bill notice issued. And finally, I want to acknowledge those of you who volunteer your time in the library each week. I cannot thank you enough for your dedication! You are an important reason Covington School is the special place that it is. Thank you! - Mrs. Starkey |
