Principal's Message

Principal's Message

Dear Covington Families,

Covington is a special place where high academic performance goes hand-in-hand with a caring, supportive environment. We firmly believe that helping our students thrive is a team effort, and we are incredibly fortunate to have an extraordinary staff on campus and strong, collaborative partnerships with our families.

At Covington, we are dedicated to growing a compassionate community of critical thinkers.

To achieve this, we thoughtfully balance care and push. We want every learner to feel safe and supported, while also experiencing an appropriate level of academic rigor that stretches them toward their full potential and future selves.

We believe in teaching the whole child. Beyond strong academic foundations, we place a deep focus on social-emotional development. When you step onto our campus, you will see a commitment to a consistent, rich student experience defined by:

  • Rich Learning Experiences: Students learn by doing, discovering purpose, agency, and a sense of community along the way.
  • Safety and Belonging: Environments where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.
  • Positive Developmental Relationships: Intentional developmental relationships between staff, students, and peers.
  • Development of Skills, Mindsets, and Habits: We are all lifelong learners; we believe in the power of “yet”, and we know we can learn and grow.
  • Integrated Supports: Meeting students where they are to ensure everyone succeeds.

Whether you are returning or joining us for the first time, we are so excited to partner with you this school year. Together, we will continue to make Covington a place where children love to learn, grow, and belong.

Warmly,

Kate Schermerhorn

About Me

A woman with a warm smile poses in front of lush green foliage.

I have been a member of the Los Altos School District since 2012, when I began my career here at Covington in 2012 as a classroom teacher. Since then, I have had the privilege of serving students across our district through summer programs, as an Online Owl, and at Springer Elementary. After completing my Master of Science in Applied School Leadership, I served as the principal at Gardner Bullis Elementary for four years before coming back to Covington as the site principal.

Among the things I cherish most about our district are the close-knit communities and deep relationships we build along the way – and Covington has always exemplified that spirit of connection. I am fully committed to LASD’s vision of growing a community of compassionate, critical thinkers through Deeper Learning experiences – anchored in purpose, agency, community, and learning by doing. At the heart of my work as an educator is a deep belief in keeping students at the center of their learning and building genuine engagement through inquiry. I look forward to continuing this meaningful work alongside the incredible Covington team and community.

When I am not at school, you might find me out hiking a trail, traveling somewhere new, exploring local restaurants, or taking my dog, London, for a walk. I look forward to bringing curiosity and joy for discovery into our school community each and every day, and I can’t wait to get to know each of you and your families.
