Next week is our Winter Recess.  Enjoy your week off whether you are skiing, going to the beach or just having a “staycation” in Los Altos.  We have many events coming up next month in March to look forward to including: an Author Visit for 3^rd-6^th grade, our Annual Science Fair, our Covington Auction and at the end of themonth, the LASD Film Festival.

Covington Auction – 1 Month Away

The Auction is coming – March 16^th.  Please join Covington parents, teachers and staff for “Fashion’s Night Out.”  Each year the Covington community comes together for a fun-filled evening of dinner and dancing, all for a good cause.  On behalf of our Covington staff and students, I thank you for all you do to provide rich learning opportunities for our students.  We appreciate all the time and resources you put into our wonderful school.  I would love to see all of you at our auction this year.  To respond online visit http://covington.schoolauction.net/2013.

Pertussis Booster for Students in grade 6: Students currently in grade 6 must have proof of a Tdap or Dtap (Pertussis or Whooping Cough) booster given after their 7th birthday (after 10th birthday is recommended) in order to begin seventh grade in August of 2013. Please provide a copy of your child’s immunization record to your school office by March 15, 2013.

Visiting Author Program News - Attention 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th,  and 6^th grade parents!  On March 6^th, our visiting author will be Peter Lerangis, a master storyteller and author of several of the bestselling books in the “”39 Clues” and “Cahills vs. Vespers” series.  He will be promoting the first book in his new series “Seven Wonders”, an adventure story fashioned around the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.  Please take time to look at your student’s Thursday envelope this week for a flyer with details about an upcoming Author Visit scheduled for March 6th & the opportunity to purchase a book signed by the author.  Order forms with payment may be returned to your classroom teacher or to the school office beginning now but no later than Friday, March 1. - Maureen Drobot Covington Librarian

KIDS NIGHT OUT Babysitting Available for Auction Night.While you are enjoying the Covington Auction, your kids will be having a blast at “Kids Night Out”!!! Los Altos Senior Girl Scout Troop 321 is used to babysitting as they do it on a monthly basis, so your little precious ones will be in good hands.  These girls are High School Freshmen – Seniors; adult supervisors and some 8^th grade Cadettes will also be there.

Science Fair - The Covington 9th Annual Science Fair is March 18-20!  This school-wide event invites students to explore new ideas and research topics. This year at Science Night, LawrenceHall of Science introduced some cool ideas about fire, flames and fuel.  Hopefully, this got your creative and scientific juices flowing!

Participation in the Science Fair is required for 5^th and 6^th graders, but ALL grades are encouraged to participate.  We get a good representation from all grades each year.  Your science project will be on display in the Multi from March 18-20 where the whole school can see your creativity.  On March 19 (Multi, 6:30-8 pm), families are invited to walk through and enjoy the science projects as well.  

·      Anyone can participate in the Science Fair!

·      Tri-fold display boards can be purchased at office supply stores

·      Set up: Monday, March 18, 8:00-8:30 am in the Multi

Fourth Grade Junior Scouts Food Drive - February 12-28th

The Fourth Grade Junior Scouts Troop 61100 are holding their second annual Food Drive from February 12-28th. All donations will be distributed to a food bank operated by InnVision Peninsula Programs, which provides food, showers, clothing, emergency assistance, medical care, and counseling to those in need in our communities in Santa Clara County and San Mateo County. Items in demand: canned meat, canned tuna, meals and soups in a can, canned beans and powdered milk.  Items not accepted: baby food, canned tomatoes, items past their due date or already opened, and perishable items. Troop 61100 will host an ice cream party for the classroom collecting the most donations.  Please place your donations in the box in your classroom. Thanks for your support!
