Important Dates:

August 20th, 8:30-9:30a.m -Coffee Bar Social  (In front of Multi)
August 22nd 8:30-9:30 am - Parent Coffee and Volunteer Sign-ups
August 22nd 2:40-3:15 - Back-to-School Stay & Play / 6th Grade Ice Cream Social Fundraiser. Parents must accompany children and provide supervision.
August 26 - Back to School Night 5:30pm, for Parents Only
August 29th - Minimum Day. Kinders dismiss at 12noon, 1-6th dismiss at 12:15pm.

Back to School Purchases: Families can now order BTS purchases (PTA membership, Class fund, Class Field Trips, Birthday Book Club, directories, Covington Wear, Walkathon Family Sponsorship).  BTS items can be ordered through link on Covington website (http://www.covingtonschool.org —>  Covington Purchases —> Back to School Purchases) OR using the paper order form (pdf on website).  Payments can be made through electronic checks, paper check or cash (to be put in PTA box in office).  Questions:  Please email Trish Carballar (ntrishwish@yahoo.com).

We're excited to announce that hot lunch will now be provided by Pasta Market. Service begins on the first day of school. Yard Supervisors Needed Monday-Friday 12:00-12:40pm every day:  If you are able to help one day a week or all five days each week, we need you!  We have openings for parents, grandparents, or college students.  If you are interested (this is a paid position) yourself or know of someone else who may be interested, please give me a call at 650.947.1100.  This is a fun and great opportunity to get to know our awesome students and see some of the great things that go on at school during the year!

Back to School Brunch: There are a few more spots available to the Back to School Brunch this Thursday at 9:30-11:30AM hosted by Carolyn LeBaron, Katherine Lyon, Lara Sullivan and Saori O'Reilly.   Cost is $35 (proceeds benefiting the PTA).  If you are interested please email Carolyn LeBaron at calolsen@yahoo.com for the Evite information.  First come, first serve.  This is a great way to say hello to new and old Covington friends and enjoy a wonderful brunch!

 
From Our STEM Teacher:
“Create something that will make the world awesome.”  - ‘Kid President’
 
Welcome back to school!  As many of you already know, my name is Katie Farley, and I am your child’s STEM teacher.  This year in STEM class, your son or daughter will have the unique opportunity to participate in an engineering design challenge, a computer programming task, a science investigation, or any combination of these!   They will visit the STEM lab each week to increase their academic knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Additionally, by engaging in curricular-integrated and standards-aligned STEM activities, your child will further develop life skills including design and creation, building, collaboration, sharing materials and tasks, delegation, conflict resolution, problem solving, and critical thinking.

Mathletes Wanted; Math Olympiad team is being formed for 4th-6th graders. Covington is building a team of students that will participate in the Math Olympiad (Division E: Grades 4-6). Practices will be held on Mondays from 2:45-4:00 in the computer lab. Our first practice will be on Monday 9/8. This is a great opportunity to work on creative problem solving skills. The team will be coached by Sandy Kandel (aka Coach K), whose teams at Loyola, Gardner Bullis, Oak, Santa Rita, and Almond have won multiple individual and team awards over the years. The problems are hard but within reach. Come on out and try!

FLAG FOOTBALL: The Fall Flag Football program is back for a tenth season, and we are looking forward to a great season with Chad Starkey, a Covington parent, taking on the head coaching position.  If you can volunteer, Chad would love to have additional help and we need to recruit a coach for our B team.

Flag Football is a co-ed, recreational program that allows girls and boys to compete together in a team sport representing their school, to have fun and learn fundamental football skills without the collisions of tackle football.
 
The LASD Flag Football program has over 300 participants for grades 4-8, with teams at every school.  The Elementary League is organized around grades 4, 5, and 6, with two teams at each school.  The A league for grades 5/6, and the B league for grades 4/5.
 
Practices and games are on Monday and Friday after school until 5 pm. Practice begins in early September and the season begins in late September, ending with a tournament the first weekend of November.
