Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Covington Staff and I would like to welcome you all back to the 2013-2014 school year! I look forward to meeting and seeing all of our Covington students and families. Los Altos School district is revolutionizing learning by empowering our teachers to challenge students to actively discover curriculum. We ignite a passion for learning as we prepare our children to become creative problem-solvers and collaborative learners. We are so honored you have chosen Covington for your child’s educational experience and we look forward to continuing Covington’s traditions and commitment to providing an engaging and inspiring education for all of our students.
This year we will continue to conserve paper by communicating through email and via our website. Thank you for supporting our “going green” initiative by logging onto our website today!
One of the most important components of an effective school is the partnership formed between educators and families. Our wonderful PTA President, Suzanne Kasso, and her Board, are committed to providing opportunities for our families to come together and collaborate around making Covington a fantastic place for kids. I hope to see you at one of these events in the near future.

New this year: LASD STEM Teachers!
Thanks to your support of LAEF, every LASD elementary school will have a full-time STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) teacher for the 2013-14 school year! The STEM teacher will support our classroom teachers in creating and teaching interactive science lessons that include hands-on experiments in addition to the current FOSS-kit based science lessons, as well as early programming ideas. Details of the program including lesson plans are currently being developed. The STEM teacher will work closely with the LASD STEM Coach, (also supported by your LAEF donations) to ensure a consistent and enriched science experience for all K-6 students.
I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Katie Farley will be the Covington STEM teacher. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for science to this exciting program. We are fortunate to have such a talented professional with expertise in science step up to this innovative challenge!
A little bit about Katie:
Katie Farley graduated Cum Laude from Presbyterian College with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a minor in psychology. She possesses two teaching credentials and a Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a science specialist option from the University of Massachusetts. Through her many years as an educator, she has had multiple opportunities to fine-tune her experience, including being a full-time science department chair and teacher, as well as teaching 3rd grade, computer technology, and physical education. She has also gained a surplus of technology expertise through her six summers of directing a technology-based summer camp. She recently relocated from Los Angeles to the South Bay area with her husband, three pugs, and two cats.
Thanks for supporting LAEF and our efforts to provide all students with an educational path that encourages creativity and engagement in learning!
